Saudi Arabia’s National Water Company has disclosed plans to invest approximately $66.4 billion U.S. over the next eight years on the nation’s water and wastewater infrastructure. About $11 billion of that spending will be on the development of desalination plants, some of which will be powered by solar energy, the company indicated. The plan also calls for spending of about $30.66 billion on improving water supplies. In addition, a key aim of the spending initiative will be an effort to stop large-scale leakage from the nation’s water systems. Previous efforts to control leakage in Riyadh and Jeddah resulted in increases in water savings from 256.07 million cubic feet in 2008 to 2.3 billion cubic feet in 2011, the National Water Company said.
