Electronic waste recycler eRecyclingCorps (ERC; Irving, TX) has raised $35 million in a round of funding led by Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers (Menlo Park, CA). ERC focuses on the management of discarded wireless communications products and counts Sprint and Verizon among its customers. According to ERC, more than 130 million mobile devices are retired from service each year in the United States alone, only 10% of which are recycled. ERC offers a proprietary, web-based platform that connects directly with the point-of-sale systems at retailers that sell mobile devices, thus providing chain-of-custody tracking throughout a product’s life cycle and allowing buyers to trade in their mobile devices when they upgrade. ERC was co-founded in 2009 by David Edmondson, former CEO of Radio Shack, and Ron LeMay, former CEO of Sprint PCS and current managing director of OpenAir Equity Partners, an original investor in ECS.
